Diagnostic Imaging

Our mobile digital radiography units allow us to attend yards to give you an onsite service for both routine and emergency cases. Most, but not all x-rays can be done at your yard. There are some instances where your vet may ask you to bring your horse to the clinic.

The clinic has a variety of ultrasound scanners for reproduction, soft tissues such as tendons and ligaments, joints, bones and abdominal imaging.

We regularly carry out Gastroscopies at the clinic and have a state of the art Gastroscopy Videocentre with Xenon lighting for high definition imaging, as well as a mobile gastroscope. This gives us a detailed picture of the lining of the horse’s stomach and the beginning part of the small bowel (the duodenum).

This procedure is vital in diagnosing Equine Gastric Ulcer Syndrome (EGUS). Such investigation enables us to quickly rule out this syndrome as a possible cause of recurrent colic, weight loss, poor performance or behavioural changes.

Endoscopy is most often used to view the structures of the respiratory system. A long flexible camera is passed through the horse’s nasal passages to view the conchae, guttural pouches, larynx and down into the trachea and bronchi. An endoscopy may be conducted in cases of suspected breathing abnormalities or nasal discharge. The video endoscopy system at the clinic allows both vet and owner to view the real time image of the respiratory system on a screen.

We also have a mobile endoscope that can be used to perform strangles investigation out of the clinic, where it is not appropriate to move the horse.

The urinary and reproductive tract conditions can also be investigated using an endoscope.
