Laser Therapy

The practice has recently acquired a class IV Medical Diode Laser System. The laser can be used for both surgical procedures (for example tumour excision (most notably sarcoid removal) or upper airway surgery) and therapeutic uses in chronic and non-healing skin wounds, proximal suspensory desmitis and back pain.

Through a stimulated photobiochemical chain of events at the cellular level which causes pain relief, reduced inflammation and an increase in microcirculation within the treated structures (Riegel, 2012). This encourages rapid healing of soft tissue injuries such as ligament and tendon damage.

A course of treatment is often carried out weekly under standing sedation.

Shockwave

Extracorporeal Shock Wave Therapy (ESWT) in horses is used for treating soft tissue and bone injuries, such as but not limited to Proximal Suspensory Desmitis, Kissing Spines and Collateral Ligament injuries. It is non-invasive and used to stimulate healing in the affected area. The machine generates and directs pressure waves towards the injury thus stimulating blood supply and therefore promoting the horse’s natural repair mechanisms. It has also been shown to have an effect on the nerves supply by making them less sensitive to pain. Shockwave therapy usually consists of 3 sessions, each session two weeks apart but this will depend on your horse’s specific condition.

Nebuliser

Available for rental

The very common condition of RAO/IAD (previously known as COPD) can be effectively treated and managed via nebulisation of directly inhaled medication. Our nebuliser systems are portable and are available for rental to patients.

Rehabilitation Round Pen

Available for Rental

Blaircourt has purchased a high spec rehabilitation pen. This can be rented by clients who require a small area to turn out their horse whilst they are being rehabilitated. See our rental terms and conditions for further details.
